About the Role

Are you passionate about biomedical research and eager to contribute to innovative therapies? We are looking for a Research Technician to join our multidisciplinary team working on strategies to prevent radiation-induced side effects. This position is part of a Dutch Cancer Society-funded project (KWF Grant nr16197) and offers a unique opportunity to make a real impact in translational research.

What You will Do
Plan and execute preclinical irradiation experiments and related laboratory work. Perform in vivo assessments, including:

  • Respiratory-rate monitoring.
  • Routine animal handling (weighing, health checks).

Conduct histological and molecular analyses:

  • Tissue embedding and sectioning.
  • Staining and imaging.
  • ELISA, Western Blot, qPCR, RNA-seq.

And:

  • Contribute to data processing, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Ensure smooth execution of experiments through careful planning and organization.

Your Working Environment

You will be appointed at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and collaborate closely with the Molecular Cell Biology section of the Department of Biomedical Sciences of Cells and Systems. Our team combines expertise in radiobiology, molecular biology, and translational medicine to improve patient outcomes. This 0.7FTE research technician position is supervised by Dr. Peter van Luijk and Dr. Julia Wiedemann.

The group of Dr. Peter van Luijk performs translational research on side effects of radiation therapy. In this project you will contribute to the testing of medication for preventing cardiopulmonary side effects of tumours of the thorax.

What We Are Looking For

  • A skilled and motivated technician with a HLO degree and proven experience in animal handling and strong laboratory skills.
  • Valid Article 9 or 12/13f permit (required).
  • Experience in histology and/or molecular biology is essential.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics or sequencing data analysis is a strong advantage.
  • A proactive, well-organized team player committed to high-quality research.

What We Offer

  • Salary will be a maximum of € 4.041,- gross per month (scale 7), depending on your qualifications and relevant experience, based on a full-time appointment.
  • 8% holiday allowance.
  • 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Development budget.
  • The conditions of employment comply with the Collective Labour Agreement for Medical Centres (CAO-UMC).
  • A part-time appointment 25 hours per week, for the project duration: 32 months.
